Artistic design for sustainable food production system

After a long and intensive preparation period, our research project INAPRO started recently with funding from the EU (Seventh Framework Programme for research, technological development and demonstration). From 2014 to 2017  scientists, system developers, programmers and plant- and fish farmers will develop in close collaborationa a sustainable & commercially applicable food production system which is based on the production method aquaponics.

Aquaponics is a portmanteau word, including aquaculture (fish rearing) and hydroponics (soilless plant breeding). An aquaponics system allows the double-use of water, nutrients, energy, and space. Wastewater from the aquaculture section is used for the nutrition of the plants.

This “Green Technolog” will be modeled, built, and evaluated for four large-scale demonstration facilities each at about 500m². The sites will be located in Spain, Belgium, Germany and China.

Also several urban farming communities in different cities will be provided with smaller mobile aquaponics systems to test them in the framework of the project researches and develompment.

As one of the 18 INAPRO partners, I will develop in 2014 the scenography and object design for the smaller mobile aquaponics systems. With the aim to integrate them aesthetically and to convey to the public the essence and the ecological relevance of the applied production method in an artistic manner.
